Clean Your Room
Jun 10, 2024I’m not one for maintenance.
What I mean is that I love building and creating but maintaining, for me, is an exercise in discipline.
Like, some people just love to work in the garden, dig in the soil, and muck about. I love planting and constructing a garden – in fact, I am growing many edibles this year – but the weeding and pruning is not my pleasure.
I also love to decorate so moving for me generates great delight! And while ongoing upkeep of my home is a given, I do it efficiently so I can get on with more constructing.
Crafting stories, marketing programs, and course outlines is where I lose myself, however ensuring they’re all labelled and filed in a way I can easily access them is not my strength.
What’s the downside of disorganization? Is a messy space a reflection of invention in play or a restriction to what you can accomplish?
Aha! ~ Make your bed
Organization is the basis for creativity. It’s like Roberts Rules in a board meeting; innovative discussion can thrive only when the structure has been adopted. Without the structure, more time is spent sorting than engaging or originating.
But there is even more to it.
In a brief video entitled, “Clean Your Room”, Dr. Jordan Peterson cites the studies of Carl Jung in asking of your environment, “Is this your house or is this your being or your mind”? Truth is, there is no difference. Peterson suggests, “If you want to organize your psyche you can start by organizing your room.” In doing so you are not only organizing your concrete world, “…you’re organizing your field of being”.
There is a price to pay for not organizing yourself and it is usually a level of suffering. So, the aim is to stop, what Peterson says is, “stupid suffering” and start with small stuff like maybe that pile of papers, tangled chords, or heap of clothes in the corner of the room that is bothering you. You will experience a substantial change in your energy and outlook when you make fixing those little bothersome things, part of your routine.
At the close of a fulfilling day, make your bed a wonderful present to open.
