Fan or Friend
May 13, 2024I remember the transition of Robin Williams and how it sparked so much discussion about the mind, the brain, chemical reactions, connections and purpose. People asked that for someone so brilliant, successful and celebrated, how could he have suffered to the extent that he did?
My question is this: did he not know how much he was loved?
I’m a believer that love heals all yet while I thought Robin was one of our greatest gifts on so many levels – because of him I laughed and cried countless times – I never so much as sent him a thank-you card. , I watched his movies, followed his comedy and marveled at his talent as early as Mork & Mindy, but that may not have been enough.
You see, there’s a difference between being a fan and being a friend. When we’re a fan we support someone because they do something we like; it’s all about us. When we’re a friend we support someone because we want what’s good for them; it’s all about them.
We have a limited connection with people on screens and stages, in leadership positions, on freedom hill and athletic arenas, running academies, big businesses, or those behind the microphone and selfie light on a broadcast we follow. We only see the side of them they allow us to see, or the side social media presents; the rest is missing as is our true connection with them. We are only a fan, not a friend.
Sometimes we like them, sometimes we don’t, but the decision is often made on a minuscule amount of information, rarely taking into consideration the entire human and what it takes for them to be them. And when they’re in a public service, performance or leadership position we often assume that it is their job to give and our job to take.
Aha! ~ Fans pay the bill. Friends provide love. We all need both.
Today I am sending cards to two larger-than-life individuals I met last week and with both felt a connection. I can no longer write or influence Robin Williams however I can be both a fan and a friend to Roger and Chris.
