In it for the Long Haul
Dec 16, 2024This Christmas season, Canadian postal workers chose to strike and have announcement they will not be delivering anything for Christmas.
Needless to say, the other carriers are backed up beyond belief, many shipments are stuck, rerouted or missing in action and drivers are exhausted. And given how conditioned – in some cases, reliant – the population is to online shopping, our businesses and lives are significantly impacted when our delivery services are not performing well.
What are we learning? Patience? Proactiveness? Adaptability?
Aha! ~ A big lesson in delayed gratification
In this instant society, we have lost the art of zooming out, preparing for challenges, and being okay to feel some discomfort for long-term success.
Preparing for disruption is the hallmark of individuals who think proactively. When you have a contingency plan in place – like cash, local vendors, back-up workers – you can ride out disruption.
Exercising patience allows you to determine whether or not your actions align with your ultimate goals, to not react to current frustrations; instead, humble yourself to see what you did not see before and implement change.
And adaptability is not only to circumstances but to the needs of other stakeholders and contributors to move towards an equitable and stronger outcome.
The “adult child” that Carl Jung speaks about, loves quick fixes and instant rewards but real grownups know that delayed gratification can be well worth the planning and humility.
This situation is a reminder that patience and persistence matter, but so do adaptability and humility. Whether you're striving for personal growth or making critical business decisions, the ability to see beyond short-term interests to focus on long-term success can make all the difference. Sometimes, stepping back and reevaluating your path is the most courageous choice of all.
